Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo beat Barcelona star Lionel Messi to win 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year award. Cristiano Ronaldo helped Manchester United to win Premier League and Champions League in 2008. Kaka won this prestigious award in 2007. This award was presented in a gala ceremony in Zurich. Ronaldo is the first player from English Premier League to win this award.
Lionel Messi helped Argentina to win the gold medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics. But Ronaldo scored 42 goals in 2008 in all competitions and helped Manchester United to clean sweep all the major tournaments. Ronaldo already won the Ballon d’Or trophy and the FIFPro World Player of the Year in 2008. But Lionel Messi might have given a stiff competition if voting was held in January, 2009.
Brazil/Los Angeles Sol forward Marta won the Women’s world player for 2008 – this is third successive time, she won this prestigious award. Undisputed best!

2. Lionel Messi (Barcelona) -678 votes – 76 first votes.
3. Fernando Torres (Liverpool) – 203 votes

Kaka selection is a controversial one but Xavi helped Spain to with European Championship and is the Player of the tournament. Who will forget Torres heroics for Liverpool and Spain? Cristiano Ronaldo is undisputed choice for his outstanding performances for Manchester United in 2008. Lionel Messi will be in similar position in 2009.
